Modern Apprentice in Childcare

Modern Apprenticeship in Childcare

Who is it for?

The Modern Apprenticeship programme is designed primarily for young people who are 16 or over. It allows you to learn in a childcare setting, earning your own wage, developing your knowledge and skills from qualified practitioners while being guided through the programme by a skilled SVQ assessor.

The apprenticeship programme will result in a fully recognised qualification – SVQ Social Services Children and Young People (SCQF Level 7) and will also deliver additional core skills including numeracy and literacy.

This qualification is also recognised by the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) and allows you registration as a Practitioner in Day Care of Children Services.

What do I need to start?

You do not need any previous childcare qualifications for entry into the course. However, it is preferred that you ideally have a qualification in English (National 5 or equivalent) and one other at the same level.

The SVQ programme is designed to learn ‘on the job’ and therefore you must be employed in a suitable environment that allows you to practice and learn while evidencing your competence in each area required. Cairellot learning Centre is also able to support your recruitment into a childcare setting, contact us for details!

Cairellot Learning Centre is a registered centre for the delivery of the Modern Apprentice In Childcare and we primarily work with apprentices who start their qualification between the ages of 16-19 years, Full funding is available is available for this age group, subject to availability. However there may potentially be options for older learners aged 20-24 yrs and those aged 25 +. Contact us for more information.

How long does it take?

The SVQ programme is holistic and you will be guided through the qualification based on your learning experiences within your setting and your own learning pace.  However, most learners successfully complete within 12 – 18 months.

You will be allocated an assessor who will be there to guide and support you through your qualification in your own workplace. They will work with you and your childcare setting to ensure that you are able to both experience the required learning and ensure you can use this towards evidencing your competence through your qualification.

Where can I go next?

Once you have completed your qualification you are a fully qualified Childcare Practitioner who can work with all ages of children in an early learning and childcare capacity.

If you want to progress in training or in your career, there are a range of qualifications that you can then undertake. These include SVQ Social Services Children and Young People (SCQF level 9- Supervisor/Manager). All qualifications are nationally recognised and result in SCQF points which can support you towards Undergraduate programmes such as the BA Childhood Practice.
